Make Concrete Plans
If possible, you should make concrete plans for your upcoming visit. People generally like to know what to expect, such as how long their guests will be staying with them, so making these plans and letting them know ahead of time can provide peace of mind.
Clean Up After Yourself
If you're traveling, you know how easy it is for all of your luggage and other belongings to get a bit messy. Make an effort to clean up after yourself.
Respect the Rules of the Home
There are usually house rules so you should learn what is proper and what is not and follow them. For example some households prefer that you don't smoke, arrive for meals on time, and many would like for everyone to be home by a certain time of night. Some houses and hosts are more flexible than others, but you should try to respect the same rules that everyone else in the house follows, even if the host tells you that it's acceptable not to.
If you're only staying for a day or two, you might not be expected to do anything around the house. If you're staying for a longer period of time, though, it's a good idea to pitch in a little bit around the house to lighten the load for the host. You obviously don't have to scrub the walls or anything, but you can help by washing dishes or straightening up the bathroom.
Give Some Privacy
Just because you are staying in their home doesn't mean that your hosts don't want any alone time. Try to retire to the bedroom, take a walk or read a book at various times throughout your trip to give the host and his or her family a little bit of space.
Take the Hint
Many people fail to take the hint when a host is ready for them to leave or is unhappy about something or other about the stay. Listen for clues, and take the hint if you feel that a host is ready for you to go home or make some changes in what you're doing while you stay there.
Staying as a house guest can be fun for everyone involved, but it can also be stressful. You don't want to wear out your welcome, so remember your manners training and follow these tips to make your stay more successful for everyone.
